Character Information Name: Savannah Lynn Curtis Age: 23 Fandom: Dear John Major: Special Education Dorm Room Desired: Benson 103 Class: 3rd Year Senior Occupation: Owner of Starfire Stables if possible, if not a riding instructor. Point In Fandom Taken From: During the movie, after she got engaged to Tim and sent John the breakup letter. It was all too much for her and she left all together. Brief History: Note--I'm playing her by the movie mostly, but adding some history from the book that was never mentioned in the movie.
Savannah was born on a small farm in North Carolina. She grew up with loving, Christian parents. From a young age she learned to work for what she wanted and to never take anything for granted. And she didn't.
She was still in school when her neighbors had their son, Alan, an autistic but very lovable child. Because he had known her and her parents from birth, Alan warmed up to Savannah and she became someone he adored greatly. This didn't change, even when Savannah went off to college.
College was a turning point for Savannah. Through high school, she had the perfect life. She made good grades, had a lot of friends, didn't date a lot and was never tempted by peer pressure. Her freshman year of college, however, she met a student--a senior--she was convinced was perfect for her. He was charming and treated her well, until one night he took her to a hotel room with the intention of sleeping with her. When she told him no, he tried to use force, however, he was not successful. She got away and called Tim, Alan's father to her rescue because he was someone she felt she could trust.
After that incident, Tim became very protective of Savannah despite the fact that she didn't date much (at all). She focused on her schooling and came back home for school breaks.
During her junior year of college, a hurricane wiped out a local family home. Along with other students, she spent her spring break at home working on rebuilding a house for the family that lost literally everything. It was also during that time that she met John Tyree. Along with some of her friends, she went to the beach and because one of them was fooling around, her bag got dropped in the water. As the bag contained "her life," she was very upset by this. John jumped into the water before Randy could and brought the bag out for Savannah. She felt in debt to him so she offered to let him join their cookout.
After that, Savannah and John began seeing each other every day for the two weeks--during this time she also spent time working on the house. Between the two things, she had little time for anything else. But she would be going back to school and John would be going back to Germany. During that two weeks, Savannah fell in love for the first time.
It was also when she decided to change her major to Special Education, knowing that it would make her school career longer.
Leaving was bittersweet. She knew that in a year John would be out of the army and they could be together. That was the only thing that kept them going strong through the rest oer junior year, through the summer and the beginning of her senior year. That and the letters they exchanged back and forth.
September 11, 2001 was a turning point in their relationship. She returned home from school and met John who had also come home on leave. It was at a party hosted by her parents that she learned of John's plans to reenlist for the war. She didn't want him to do it, but as someone who couldn't be selfish, she told him to do what he felt was right. He chose to reenlist.
The next two years put a massive strain on their relationship. The longer he was gone, the more she knew that he wouldn't be coming home anytime soon. The war wasn't getting any closer to a resolution and she couldn't ask John not to reenlist.
During this time, Tim became sick, she spent all of her breaks at home helping him and caring for Alan while Tim couldn't. It was then that she began falling for him. It never was a love like the one she shared with John. A part of her had always loved Tim, respected him. It wasn't a passionate love, but it was a love to where she knew she had to do something to help him. She agreed to marry him and was faced with a difficult task, to send a letter to John breaking up with him.
After sending the letter, Savannah realized that she couldn't truly live with her decision, she asked her parents to keep an eye on Tim and Alan and left town, somewhere along the way ending up at KSU.
